Measured Surveys: Here’s why they’re vital to any project
Our new Head of Measured Surveys & Data Capture, Craig Greaves explores the misconceptions surrounding surveying and the modern techniques we’re implementing at AG…
Before we delve into the misconceptions of surveying, I think it’s important to address how surveying has evolved. I started my career in surveying a little over 20 years ago and whilst the technology was there, it was only just starting to take off.
The first portable laser scanner was launched in 1998 and scanned at 1,200 points per second at up to 50m against a flat white surface.
Fast forward to 2019, Leica introduced the RTC360 Laser scanner which is used by AG for most of our scanning jobs. This scanner has a capture rate of up to two million points per second resulting in a scan time of just 30 seconds – or 90 seconds with colour!
We also make use of the P-Series scanner, BLK 360 and BLK to go!
Alongside laser scanning, AG offers Topographical surveys utilising TS16 Total Stations and an extensive code list to produce highly accurate and detailed measured surveys to fit all specifications and budgets again a long way from the old Theodolites.
So, let’s address the common misconceptions surrounding topographical surveys…
“Old surveys are sufficient.”
Features change over time! Using old Land or Measured Building Surveys can present various risks and challenges.
“Surveys are too expensive.”
Plot size only marginally effects the time taken to undertake a good quality measured survey, many other factors have an impact such as obstructions, how much detail/features there are, accessibility etc.
A good surveyor will factor all this plus look at the best way to approach a survey, what equipment to use and when’s best to undertake the survey.
Often measured surveys are one of the first tasks to undertake on a project and as a result can be ignored or neglected but in reality, investing in a good survey from the offset will always be invaluable.
“All Topographical surveys are equal.”
At AG, we use a vast code list built up over years of surveying to accurately pick up and represent all features.
Our methodologies have been developed to ensure data is recorded as accurately as possible, plus our team comes with over 30 years’ experience.
All surveys are undertaken with the same level of importance no matter how big or small, we follow a strict methodology and vigorous QA procedures to ensure the best quality deliverables on all our projects.
Personally, I believe undertaking a proper measured survey it vital to any project, it sets the foundations for the whole process ensuring all parties are working on the correct page and greatly reducing the risk of stumbling across costly problems further down the line.
The future of surveying at AG Built Environment Consultancy…
Our department is growing and we’re embracing the rapid development in technology in the surveying world.
I’d like to offer a full range of Geospatial services including Topographical, Measured Building (both 2D and 3D) Laser Scanning and Point Cloud services plus 3D modelling with a reputation for quality and efficiency that keeps clients coming back, time and time again.
Most projects need some form of measured survey and I’d like to see our team be the first point of contact for new and existing clients.
Looking for a consultancy to undertake surveys on your behalf?
Let’s talk through your project what your needs are, the purpose of the survey and ways could we provide a service beyond just providing a drawing or model.
There are so many ways to tackle a survey and here at AG we are always happy to discuss the best options for a project, couple this with the wide range of other services on offer – I think we are a solid choice for any project.
